The Importance of Occlusal Equilibration in Equine Dental Health

In the world of equine care, dental health is a critical component that often gets overlooked. Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Moskoski at Fredericksburg Equine, where we explored the concept of occlusal equilibration—a dental procedure that goes beyond the standard practice of floating a horse’s teeth.

Understanding the Basics

When we talk about floating, we’re referring to the process of filing down the sharp edges of a horse's teeth to prevent discomfort while eating. However, floating alone does not address the fundamental issues of tooth wear and balance. This is where occlusal equilibration comes into play.

The Problem of Uneven Wear

During our examination of a horse, we noticed a stark contrast between the upper and lower teeth. The lower teeth measured approximately two to two-and-a-half inches long, while the upper teeth were barely visible, having worn down significantly. This imbalance in tooth height can lead to a host of problems, including difficulty chewing, pain, and premature tooth loss.

What Is Occlusal Equilibration?

Occlusal equilibration involves the careful adjustment of the occlusal surfaces of the teeth to ensure even wear. The goal is to balance the rate at which teeth wear down, allowing them to last longer and function more effectively. By addressing the disparities in tooth length and alignment, we can potentially "steal" tooth height from the lower jaw to replenish what is missing in the upper jaw.

Why It Matters

When a horse's teeth wear unevenly, it doesn’t just affect their ability to eat—it can lead to more severe dental issues down the road. Premature wear and loss of teeth can result in chronic pain and other health complications, impacting the horse's overall well-being.

Occlusal equilibration is an essential preventive measure that helps maintain dental health and prolong the life of a horse's teeth. It’s a proactive approach that recognizes the importance of balance and uniformity in equine dental care.

Conclusion

In summary, while floating is a vital part of equine dental care, it is not sufficient on its own. Occlusal equilibration provides a comprehensive solution that addresses the root causes of tooth wear and ensures the longevity of a horse's dentition. By investing in proper dental care, horse owners can enhance their animal's quality of life and overall health. If you have concerns about your horse's dental health, consider consulting a qualified equine dentist to discuss the benefits of occlusal equilibration.
